Welcome to McCarthy Art Gallery |
|
gallery - building - history…….
McCarthy Art Gallery is located in New Zealand’s oldest suburb Parnell; a part of Auckland famed for its galleries, cafes, restaurants, charming boutique-style stores and remarkable historic buildings. The Gallery is situated on the ground level of the Axis Building, an underground gallery with concave white walls; adjoining Martin Hughes & Designsource premises and right opposite from Cibo restaurant.
The Axis Building (nee Nestle chocolate factory), built in 1926, supplied sweets to the nation for 40 years. When production moved to the South Island, the site was left to decay, and sadly fell into disrepair. In1981 an ambitious project converted the building to offices, and apartments successfully maintaining the grandeur of the original structure while offering a 21st century setting for the creative, vibrant businesses within. This historic site is imbued with flavours past, and present.
